Recruitment Toolkit: Interviewing Top Tips
Posted on 05-06-23 by Jack Woolsey
Interviews are often the first time a candidate has contact with the company, so it’s extremely important to make a good first impression if you are wanting to attract the best talent!
Here are some tips for interviewers to help make the process smooth and successful:
1. Before the interview, research the candidate – read through their CV or application and any other information you have available. Check their LinkedIn and other social media channels. This will help you to ask relevant, targeted questions.
2. Create an open and welcoming environment for the candidate and provide a clear structure to the interview.
3. Ask open-ended questions that encourage the candidate to talk about their experience and skills and allow plenty of time for the candidate to answer your questions. Use a mix of behavioural and situational questions to understand their past experiences and how they might handle specific scenarios.
4. Listen carefully to the candidate’s answers – take notes as you go, and be sure to ask follow-up questions if you need clarification. Maintain good eye contact, provide verbal and non-verbal cues to show engagement, and ensure clarity in your own communication.
5. Assess cultural fit and values alignment: Evaluate whether the candidate’s values, work style and personality align with the company culture. Consider the team dynamics and the candidate’s potential ability to collaborate and thrive within your organisation. Ask questions that explore their preferred work environment and their alignment with the company’s mission and values.
By following these tips, you’ll be able to make the most of the interview process; getting a better understanding of how suitable the candidate is for the role, as well as leaving a good impression of your business.
